With the aid of Doug McKenzie, Production Engineering Superintendent at the Harmac pulp mill, Pope & Talbot piloted a MT&R program at Harmac’s wastewater treatment facility. They devised new ways of recording and reporting data to promote energy conservation through target-setting. This means an annual savings of $50,000 in energy costs.
Catalyst established a comprehensive energy efficiency initiative called Power Watchers, setting a first-year target of sustainable electricity savings of $5 million a year. To achieve this, they developed a sound energy management plan that engaged employees and focused on improving mill processes. The Crofton mill has more than achieved its savings target.
Since 2003, Glenn Brenan, School District 61’s Maintenance Supervisor and Energy Manager, has been coordinating the district’s energy management program and overseeing projects to improve the energy efficiency of all schools. A key focus is mentoring the dedicated students taking part in BC Hydro’s Power Smart Students program – the largest such group in the province.
