Burnaby worked with Honeywell Ltd. On a $5.6 million energy efficiency project, involving 49 of the City’s facilities. They are the first municipality in B.C. to embark on an energy reduction program of this magnitude. Complementing the hard-wired upgrades is an employee awareness program, including an annual EnergyFit Day for employees, and community outreach initiatives.
Oxford’s task: retrofitting the lighting for Vancouver’s Marine Building in Vancouver, a designated heritage site. The challenge: preserving the building’s character while improving the energy efficiency of its lighting. Oxford worked with BC Hydro and Quantum Lighting to come up solutions, including upgrading existing fixtures with custom-designed components, and replacing others with new, heritage-designed ones.
B.C.’s energy efficiency leader in the grocery industry, Overwaitea is implementing energy efficiency upgrades at one-fifth of their 90 BC stores, with more to come. They have T5 high-output fluorescent lighting in retail and warehouse settings, and their 13 Changes Recycling Centres are entirely powered through the purchase of BC Hydro Green Power Certificates.
An international chemical producer, ERCO had an extremely energy-intensive chemical reaction process that produced sodium chlorate and hydrogen gas. They embarked on an experimental project to reduce the voltage needed, taking advantage of BC Hydro’s new stepped rates. This is the single largest demand-side management initiative that Power Smart has ever supported.
In 2006, Vancouver Wharves won a Power Smart Award for lighting improvements, which included T5 fluorescent lighting in unheated warehouses. In 2007, they installed T5s and energy-saving metal halide lamps in other areas. They also have an automated control system that programs lighting levels based on use, and their outside lighting has new photocell controls.
