PROVINCIAL HEALTH SERVICES AUTHORITY
Over the last several years, the health sector in B.C. has saved 12 gigawatt hours of electricity through the implementation of energy-efficient measures. Of the 12 gigawatt hour total, the Provincial Health Services Authority is responsible for nearly half.Behind the Provincial Health Services Authority’s inspiring actions is Senior Energy & Project Manager John Percival. A constant champion of energy conservation, John developed a strategic energy management program that incorporates sustainable methods to achieve energy savings. These best practices, combined with energy efficiency projects, have helped the Provincial Health Services Authority consistently meet annual reduction targets, which increase from year to year.John keeps employees engaged through an annual energy awareness week and an open-door policy, encouraging staff at all levels to be involved in energy conservation.The bottom line: for the Provincial Health Services Authority, energy savings gained through improved energy management means more money where it counts—for patient care.

BC HOUSING
Seeking ways to make their housing stock and operations more energy efficient and sustainable, BC Housing hired an Energy Champion, Craig Edwards, who has developed a sustainable energy management plan for new construction, retrofits, and tenant education and awareness—a blueprint for energy efficiency. Already BC Housing has completed energy retrofits on 49 buildings, and 40 high-performance, multi-unit residential building projects are under design or construction. The blueprint is coming to life in B.C.’s low-income housing sector.
DOMTAR PULP & PAPER PRODUCTS
Bill Adams, Manufacturing Services Manager at Domtar Pulp & Paper products, took the lead and sponsored the development of a sustainable energy management program in 2007. The program aims to reduce electricity consumption through hard-wired, operational and cultural changes. After hiring an Energy Manager, Domtar conducted an energy management assessment, did numerous energy studies, held employee awareness sessions and instituted a monitoring, tracking and reporting program. In just one year, Domtar has made tremendous progress in achieving their energy management program’s goals.
