INNOVATION IN SUSTAINABLE BUILDING DESIGN

DISCOVERY PARKS TRUST
Discovery Parks Trust proved that green buildings have greater appeal in today’s environmentally conscious market. When they were planning a new commercial building, they participated in BC Hydro’s High Performance Building Program design process, and emerged with a building design that will consume one-third less electricity than a conventional design while providing greater tenant comfort and health.

The Discovery Parks building design incorporates comprehensive energy efficiency features, including energy-efficient windows, lighting fixtures and controls, demand control ventilation, and heat recovery and rainwater harvesting systems. And the project is breaking ground as one of the first commercial buildings in North America to implement a variable refrigerant flow system.

Discovery Parks’ approach paid off with the successful sale of the completed building to Morguard Investments, which stated that the green building aspect was a key factor in its purchase decision. Thanks to leaders like Discovery Parks, energy-efficient design is transforming the commercial building market.

RICHMOND OLYMPIC OVAL – CITY OF RICHMOND
The Richmond Olympic Oval won’t just be a showcase for sports, it will also be a model for cutting-edge green design. Designed with energy-efficient features through BC Hydro’s High Performance Building Program, the Oval will achieve Silver LEED® certification. The building demonstrates environmental responsibility through rooftop rainwater collection and an innovative refrigeration system that captures and reuses extra heat energy. By meeting rigorous standards for green building development, the Oval leads the way in energy efficiency for sports facilities in Canada.
